While in a conference about “Corporate Solutions in the cloud”, which took place at Microsoft headquarters in Madrid, Wolters Kluwer, a global leader in providing information, training and software for professionals, introduced the success story of Smarteca, a solution developed in Azure (Microsoft) with CAPSiDE’s systems engineering services.
Smarteca is a digital library designed to multiply the professional performance of consultants, lawyers, company directors and public administration professionals, easing acquisition, read, storage and management of specialised publications in electronic form.
“Smarteca was born from the need to offer our clients, law, consultancy, administration and business professionals, a solution that would allow them to consult publications from their professional libraries, so they can work with them at any time, in every device and without storage problems”, said José Medina, CTO at Wolters Kluwer Spain.
“You have to keep in mind that, to do their daily work, our customers depend on specialised publications. Until some time ago, that work had to be done by consulting paper works, with all the physical and updating difficulties that come along with this form”, added Medina.
Smarteca’s development required the dump of a huge information volume. Our goal was to transfer our paper experience to a multi-device ecosystem, taking advantage of all the possibilities offered by the digital environment, and integrate functionalities adapted specifically to the markets we focus on.

After analysing all the options, Wolters Kluwer considered that the most suitable solution, with CAPSiDE’s tech support, was to deploy the Smarteca project in Microsoft Azure.
Arturo López, Partner Technology Strategist at Microsoft, highlighted speed, scalability and cost efficiency as the main Azure advantages. ‘”Development timing and time to market are reduced to the minimum”, according to López. “Azure allows you to overcome the fear of not being able to respond to the demand, as the resources adjust exactly to the client’s requirements at any time”, he added.
Álvaro Cabrera, Regional Director at CAPSiDE, pointed the key aspects of this technology: “the environment reliability to develop critical services”. Cabrera added that “IT architecture, designed and developed in Azure, answers the business real requirements, optimising costs with real use of the platform at any time”.
Cabrera also highlighted the security guarantees that the Smarteca project required, and explained how these requirements can be achieved with a proper design in Microsoft Azure.
