SysAdmins have been the core of CAPSiDE for years. Our current SysOps team keeps operating and monitoring critical digital platforms for all our customers, resolving any problems that may appear and keeping their businesses up & running 24/7.

On July 29th it’ll be SysAdmin Appreciation Day 2016, and it’s about time that we recognise our SysAdmins superheroes for everything that they do for us. We might forget they’re there when everything runs smoothly, but it’s important to remember that we’ve got that peace of mind because they’re working on our infrastructures every day.

A few days ago José Luis Martínez, our CTO, reminded our team in one of our Wednesday Breaks (a monthly recurring catch up with all the team) that our SysAdmins are more than that. Our SysAdmins don’t only operate and monitor the critical systems, they also design, automate and build the systems infrastructures.

They’re SysArchitects.

SysArchitects are the new SysAdmins

The IT landscape is continuously changing, and with that constant change comes an important transformation in IT roles. That’s why the SysAdmin definition doesn’t completely apply anymore.

A system administrator may acquire, install, or upgrade computer components and software; provide routine automation; maintain security policies; troubleshoot; train and/or supervise staff; or offer technical support for projects.

Wikipedia

“Another SysAdmin installed the routers, laid the cables, configured the networks, set up the firewalls, and watched and guided the traffic for each hop of the network that runs over copper, fiber optic glass, and even the air itself to bring the Internet to your computer.”

Every day more companies embrace Cloud Computing and start opening their minds to the benefits that Cloud Computing may bring them.  But going cloud is a really big change, and your classic SysAdmins won’t necessarily be ready for that change.

SysArchitects are the ones that will help you in all the stages of your Cloud journey, from the assessment and planning to adoption and optimisation. They design, build and operate IT infrastructures, and they’re (almost) cloud native. They’re comfortable with every part of the process, from understanding your business and platform requirements to securing your infrastructure. From designing the high availability architecture to automating and operating it and helping it take advantage of Cloud benefits.

As happens with SysAdmins, we tend to forget they’re there when everything works perfectly fine. And today we shouldn’t only appreciate their efforts and day-to-day work, but also trust them.

SysAdmins, SysArchitects, Cloud Builders or even “magicians”, as some may call them. They might not be the most visible face of IT but, without them, we’d be lost.

Thank you! Happy SysAdmin SysArchitect Appreciation Day! 🙂

We’re celebrating SysAdmin Appreciation Day with a free #capsideLAB workshop about AWS Kinesis and Zombies on July 28th. Zombies are coming and we’ll need some help to keep the world safe. Want to join us?

PSSSSTT!! We keep looking for more astonishing SysOps Engineers to join our team as SysArchitects. Don’t be shy and write Hermes!
